Qld: Parklands to attract tourists, says Beattie
BRISBANE, Feb 11 AAP - Brisbane's new Roma Street parklands would help the city become
an irresistible magnet for tourists, Premier Peter Beattie said today.
The parklands were being built on the former Roma Street railway goods yards on the
edge of the Brisbane CBD.
The $72 million project had transformed a wasteland into what would be further developed
into a unique world-class people's place, Mr Beattie said.
"This project is returning to the city its green heart and lungs," Mr Beattie said
on a tour of the project today.
"It will breathe new life into what is already a very livable city and ensure its development
into one of the most desirable cities in the world."
Mr Beattie said he planned to integrate his government's vision of the Smart State
with the greening of the capital.
"My vision for Brisbane is of a city interwoven with green spaces that breathe life
into the central business district, making it a place that Queenslanders enjoy - a city
that also offers businesses and the people who work in them world-class amenities," Mr
Beattie said.
